It’s About Time!

It has been several months since my last comic book review. Not that I stopped reading comics – oh no – I was just a little bit swamped with other things in life. In that intervening time, however, I was finally able to watch Thor: The Dark World. I thought it was OK, but not superb. How do I know this? Because even now, just months after watching it, I had to look up a plot summary to remember exactly what happened! That’s definitely not the sign of a great movie. Anyway, I did like the parts about the evil dark elf Malekith. Just the other day I got to thinking that I have the comics where he makes his first appearance, so I thought I’d continue my pseudo-streak of reviewing older Thor comics. Lucky you!

A Weakness For Cookies?

I love me a good cookie – especially if it has chocolate chips in it! I’ll readily admit that I have a weakness for cookies, but do you think any of the Marvel superheroes do too? Well, apparently Thor does! The hands-down lamest part of this issue is when the Son of Odin is duped by a police-officer who offers him laced cookies! C’mon! Oh well, I guess it’s good to know that our heroes have some weaknesses just like us… right?

Notable Notes: A search for the Casket of Ancient Winters!

Beware of Helpful Women?

If there is one subtle take-away from this issue it is this: that characters in Thor should *always* be wary of beautiful or helpful women. Why is that? Well, because in this comic those kinds of women are nothing but trouble, that’s why! The doctor’s secretary, Melodi, the jail guard and especially the hot woman in the car – they all have really mean ulterior motives. For the most part they get what’s coming to them… but the car woman – she turns out to be something very different (and very bad) indeed!

Alpha Mail?

I love wolves, and always have. In this issue we get to see a very cool messenger for Odin: Geri the wolf – which delivers a personal invitation to Balder. How cool would that be? Having a wolf summon you to an audience with the king – very awesome indeed!

Notable Notes: Thor rallies an old timer to help him fight a dragon!

Odin the Grey?

In the last few issues, Odin has disguised himself as a wandering traveler and visited some people who were left none-the-wiser. I couldn’t help but think how much he looked and acted like Gandalf in those scenes! I wonder how much one mythology was mixed with another there? Oh well, it was still fun, even if the scenes did feel a little bit out of place.

The Bottom of the World!

I am a big fan of science programs on TV, especially the ones on PBS – like Nature and Nova. Every time they show scientists and animals in Antarctica I always think it would be fun to go there… but only for a little while. Seeing the penguins and the harsh environment, or studying sea ice would be totally interesting! Anyway, here is an issue where Thor goes to that very continent – but it’s not for scientific research!

Notable Notes: Thor battles an ancient dragon!

Godzilla in Marvel’s Manhattan?

I used to love to watch the Godzilla movies when I was a kid. Yes they were kind of hokey, and I got great pleasure from making fun of the bad English dubbing – but there was something undeniably cool about the monster itself! That strange scream, its fire/electric breath and the way it stomped on Japanese cities were proof that Godzilla was different than your average dragon. Anyway, this issue reminded me of those old movies… well, except for the dubbing part.

Notable Notes: The end of the first Beta Ray Bill story arc.

Science Fiction Mythology?

I have long been a fan of both mythology and science fiction. Perhaps that is a big reason why the Thor comic series appeals to me so much – there are many elements of both genres within its covers. This issue is a great example as Thor and friends set out to do battle with aliens from another dimension. Ah… just one more reason to love comics!

Story & Art: Walter Simonson
Other Artists: John Workman, Jr., George Roussos
Notable Notes: Odin forges a new hammer!

A New Hammer?

When I was little I would carry around my dad’s hammer and pretend that I was Thor. I loved the whole idea of Mjolnir, especially how no one else could lift it – even the Hulk! Anyway, I consider Thor’s hammer to be one of his most defining characteristics, and so I find this issue to be very intriguing – seeing as how Odin crafts a new hammer which is very similar to Mjolnir!

Better Than A Superbowl?

Don’t you love a really good game? A great fight? An evenly matched competition? I do! This issue gives us one of the best fights to take place in the Marvel Universe – and probably one of the few times that Thor gets really worried!

Artists: Dale Eaglesham, Scott Koblish, Joe Rosas, John Costanza (and new creative team of Andy Kubert, Jesse Delperdang, Jason Wright and Todd Klein)
Notable Notes: Captain America finally resolves the Skrull crisis!

Avenge With A Vengeance?

It seems like whenever Cap gets beaten down he always comes back in a big way. The story in this issue (the last 3 actually) is no different, but this one has a little bit more subdued (depressing?) ending. Not sure I really like it that way.

An Unbeatable Foe?

There is something compelling about a story featuring an unbeatable (or nearly unbeatable anyway) enemy. Whether a movie, a novel or a comic book a story that has an enemy do something amazing and nearly unimaginable keeps us on the edge of our seats! Here is a great story – and a great beginning to an even longer story arc – about an alien who gives Thor a true run for his money!

Dracula Sucks!

Ha-ha – see what I did there? But really, I have never been a fan of the vampire. Bram Stoker’s original book was ok, but that is about the only vampire / Dracula story I have ever liked – the rest have been disappointing. I was hoping that his appearance in this comic would be more to my liking (I don’t know why) but, alas, it was not. So suck it Dracula!

Dracula Rises!

The seductive blood sucker makes a timely appearance in this issue of Thor, and is immediately drawn to the beautiful Sif. Can’t say I blame him though, but will she be worth the price of her angry boyfriend? Hmm, my money’s on Thor.
