My Post About Richie Rich at The Longbox Project
Jul 12th, 2013 by Rusty

A few weeks ago I discovered the very cool comic book site The Longbox Project when the owner contacted me asking if I would write a guest post. I happily obliged and my article is now up and viewable. Be sure to check it out, and while you’re there take a look around at some of the other wonderful stories on that very fun site!

When you’re done you can read my review of Richie Rich and Jackie Jokers #34 right here at The Comic Prospector!

Enjoy!

Old TV Shows?

Do you ever watch old TV shows – like from the 1960s, 70s or 80s? I do, especially now that it is so easy to do with internet and video services like Netflix. I think “Bewitched” and “Magnum P.I.” are both still loads of fun to watch! Here’s an issue which brings to mind some of the popular series from the 1970s and makes use of one of the funnest characters in the Harvey universe to do so: Jackie Jokers!

Extreme Up Trading!

Have you heard about these people who do extreme up-trading? You know, they start with some small object (or amount of money) and then try to see who can get the biggest or best or most expensive object just by bartering? I’ve heard of some pretty cool things, like people who have acquired cars that way! This issue demonstrates that concept as the little master of money himself, Richie Rich, goes about doing that very thing!

Another Famous Harvey Comic

I’ve mentioned before that I grew up reading Harvey comics, and that they are a big reason I love comic books so much. Anyway, I thought Casper was cool but he wasn’t my favorite Harvey character – that honor belonged to Hot Stuff. Casper was definitely the most famous of Harvey’s characters though, and even now, years after the comics stopped being published, you can still find proof of the popularity of this friendly ghost!

Harvey’s Brief Disappearance

When I was 12 years old I realized that I could no longer find Richie Rich, Casper or Hot Stuff comics anywhere! It was kind of shocking, because they were my favorite ones and I totally loved them. After asking around at several comic shops I found out that they weren’t publishing comic books anymore. I was sad… but a few years later I was delighted to find that Harvey Comics returned after some reorganizing at their company. This was the first issue I picked up in 1986, and it was a sweet reunion indeed!

Devils!

Hot Stuff comics were my earliest comic reading experience. My mom used to buy them for my brother and me when we went on long car trips, and I would blast through them. It must have been here that I picked up my fascination with devils and demons. I’m not a devil worshiper by any means, but I’ve always thought they were cool characters in stories, movies and most of all Dungeons & Dragons! Reading this comic reminded my why I started thinking they were cool!

52 Pages… Really?

So, the cover of this issue shows that it is “52 pages” – which I took to mean 52 pages of story, however that is not the case. Sure, there are 52 pages in the book, but only 39 of them are actual story pages (and 2 of those are a text story!) Nevertheless, I actually enjoyed seeing and reading the old ads – things like Grit, Hostess, American Dental Association, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts and the ever-famous Sea-Monkies! They were quite a hoot I tell ya! I’m sure I didn’t like the ads when I was a kid, but now they amuse me to no end!
