An Unbeatable Foe?

There is something compelling about a story featuring an unbeatable (or nearly unbeatable anyway) enemy. Whether a movie, a novel or a comic book a story that has an enemy do something amazing and nearly unimaginable keeps us on the edge of our seats! Here is a great story – and a great beginning to an even longer story arc – about an alien who gives Thor a true run for his money!

Synopsis:

Thor #337, page 15While Donald Blake (aka Thor) is taking a leisurely stroll in Chicago’s Grant park he is contacted (abducted, actually!) by Nick Fury – who takes him to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier for a briefing about a super powerful and extremely fast alien spaceship that is headed for Earth. Thor agrees to help and heads out to intercept the ship. Meanwhile in Asgard Sif is sad because Thor has forsaken her, Baldur is trying to drink away his painful memories of Hela and the banished Loki tries to entice a beautiful huntress. Anyway, these are all minor side stories because the real action is taking place aboard Skuttlebutt (hee-hee… that name always makes me snigger!) the alien ship on which Thor finds himself face-to-face with a powerful alien / monster named Beta Ray Bill. Bill overcomes Thor (what?!) and when the ship crash lands on Earth he does the unthinkable and picks up Thor’s hammer! Not only does he use it against the gathering human army, but Odin actually mistakes Bill for Thor and recalls him to Asgard! Wow – just, Wow!

My 2 Cents:

  • Whew – where do I start? This is the beginning of a fantastic and highly memorable run by Walt Simonson. I remember seeing and hearing about Beta Ray Bill when I was a kid, and I always thought he looked cool but I figured he was an enemy to Thor. Well, several years ago I finally got around to collecting and reading these wonderful issues and I found out Bill’s true nature. What an awesome character!
  • What a cover huh? How can you not love it! This is tied (along with Daredevil #13) as one of my two all-time favorite comic book covers. Yeah, it’s that cool!
  • This issue, to me anyway, is the epitome of a great comic book story. It combines a bit of suspense with a terrifying alien who does something unimaginable – and then ends with a massive cliffhanger! This is the kind of comic book story I love, and it reminds me why reading comics can be so darn cool!

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 5 stars
  • Art: 4 stars
  • Fun Factor: 5 stars
