Extreme Up Trading!

Have you heard about these people who do extreme up-trading? You know, they start with some small object (or amount of money) and then try to see who can get the biggest or best or most expensive object just by bartering? I’ve heard of some pretty cool things, like people who have acquired cars that way! This issue demonstrates that concept as the little master of money himself, Richie Rich, goes about doing that very thing!

Synopsis:

After reading Casper #206 I decided his comics were more fun than Richie Rich’s, so I thought I give this hybrid title a try.

“A Tale of Two Pennies” – This 4-part story begins as Richie Rich sets out on a quest to see what he can buy with just one penny. Meanwhile, in the Enchanted Forest, Casper and Wendy are also trying to find out the same thing. Through some clever up-trading Richie turns his penny into a loaf a bread, so he goes to the grocery store to try and find some sandwich ingredients. It is in that store he meets Casper and Wendy, who are working for some money. Wendy has enchanted the price stamper – which is going crazy stamping the value on *everything* in sight. When it stamps his loaf of bread with a absurdly huge dollar amount, the 3 friends discover a diamond inside it and embark on a quest to discover why it was there. This, of course, leads to a bunch of crooks and their diamond smuggling ring. No problem – this isn’t anything Richie and his “dream” friends can’t handle!

My 2 Cents:

  • Ah, there’s nothing like seeing several of your favorite characters together in one comic book! I think Richie Rich and Casper comics are some of the most fun books to read! Now, if they had just made a Richie and Hot Stuff comic… sigh.
  • I loved the longer story line in this issue! I think it was much more fun and nicer to read than several shorter, unrelated stories.
  • I also really liked the clever, subtle jokes inserted into this issue – like Wendy’s Aunt Velma’s advice costing 2 cents! Ha!

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 4 stars
  • Art: 4 stars
  • Fun Factor: 5 stars
