Honoring Veterans

Today is Veterans Day here in the USA, and I figured what better time to read and review Captain America! This is a good issue for it too, because Cap save several soldiers in a submarine. In fact, one of them is heard to quip about the Captain, “I don’t get it! Ain’t he Army?” Ha! I found that to be the funniest line in the whole book.

Synopsis and Thoughts:

I have always been a fan of Captain America. I’m not sure why, exactly, but it may have something to do with my older brother liking him when we were kids. There is just some sort of comic appeal to him that I find hard to resist. Thus, when I was getting into comics again (after an 11 year drought) in 1998 this was one of the first comics I tried. I’ve held on to the series ever since, because it is so dang good! It was totally fun reading this one again, especially since Mark Waid is such a fine author. I totally recommend it.

In this volume of Captain America (entitled “Heroes Return”) Cap has just returned to regular reality after being gone for a year, along with the rest of the Marvel heroes, battling Onslaught. In the 1st issue Captain America showed up in Japan, much to the delight of his adoring Japanese fans. However, in this issue he is back in the states, and it starts with a bang while he is battling a group of Hydra thugs. He uses a clever shield trick to rescue an admiral only to find out that Hydra has infiltrated a nearby submarine and plans to release a powerful Russian computer virus in a mere 22 minutes! Oh no! Cap to the rescue! He miraculously gets on board and manages to fight off Hydra, but he doesn’t make it in time and ends up losing his shield while rescuing the ranking officer. Kind of sad actually.
