All New Archie?!

It has been a few years since the All New Archie series re-launched the Riverdale Universe. Even then I was late to the game, and only picked up a few issues after it had been going for a while. Knowing that Mark Waid was the writer helped, because I like most of his stuff. Anyway, I had been wanting to get some more issues of this series, but they were turning out to be expensive and hard to find. So I was excited when Humble Bundle offered a bunch of the electronic TPBs recently, and I jumped on that bandwagon while I could! Anyway, here are my thoughts on the first issue of this re-launched series.

We readers are introduced (literally) to Archie Andrews, and he proceeds to give us a tour of Riverdale High School and bring us up to speed on what is currently happening there. It appears that Archie and his girlfriend-since-kindergarten, Betty Cooper, have recently broken up over some “lipstick incident” – and the whole school is talking about it! A few of Archie’s friends decide to get the couple back together, and enlist Jughead’s reluctant help in getting everybody to vote for Archie and Betty as the king and queen of the Homecoming dance. At the dance Archie ends up filling in for the lead guitarist, but he doesn’t get voted as the king because someone (Ahem – with a crown!) rigged the votes the other way! Gasp! Oh well, Jughead explains that maybe it is better for the two ex-lovers to realize what they are missing. As Archie heads home he passes an ominous looking billboard announcing the arrival of Lodge Industries. But I’m guessing nothing will come of that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 5 stars – Alright, this was a cool story! I am often not a fan of re-launches, but it was really fun starting off with a break-up and seeing the history of Archie and Betty.
  • Art: 4 stars – Overall Ms. Staples does great work and I really enjoyed the art on this book. It took me a while to get used to the way some of the classic characters looked, but I think they were true to form – and I appreciated that!
  • Fun Factor: 5 stars – I really enjoyed reading this book! I wasn’t as put off by the updated look as much as I anticipated, and I actually liked the story and direction this series is taking! Bravo!
