Are There Any Good Clones?

Why is it that in science fiction in general, and comics specifically, the cloning process always seems to have some fatal flaw? Has no big-brained superhero figured out how to correctly do it yet? C’mon people – we can clone sheep here in the “normal” world why can’t you folks clone a fantastic superhero of unknown origins? Sheesh! 😉

In The Man of Steel #4 we see how Superman and Lex Luthor become enemies. This issue plays off that and gives us the story of how Lex tricks Superman in to coming to his labs so he can scan his DNA – which he then uses as a template for his own, home-grown version of Superman! Mwa-ha-ha-ha… such evilness! But there’s one little problem – Superman isn’t human and so his DNA doesn’t affect the clone like the scientists thought it would. Instead Luther Corp creates a gray, grunting, Frankenstein-like monster that goes about committing random acts of kindness as well as mayhem. He saves Lois’s blind sister, for example, but destroys loads of property because he doesn’t like Superman… go figure! Anyway, all ends well when he discovers that some of his “dust” has a very special property.

My 2 Cents:

  • Yes, this story had some cheesy parts – like Lois’s sister and Lex speaking Chinese, but overall I thought it was pretty good and lots of fun to read!
  • The art in this issue seemed a bit stronger than previous ones. I found it to be a smidge tighter, cleaner and crisper.
  • The ending was a little too lovey-dovey for my tastes, but it was pretty cool and it earned some brownie points for Bizarro!

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 4 stars
  • Art: 4 stars
  • Fun Factor: 5 stars
