Early Superman Stories

I’m not sure how many other times the early Superman stories have been retold in comic form, probably a lot, but I sure enjoyed reading them in this series. Since I’m way too young to have been around during the Golden and Silver Age of comics, my main reference for Superman’s origins came from the 1978 movie, so it was very fun to read about all those “big” moments in a comic book – and one that didn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to boot!

Synopsis:

The Man of Steel #1 introduced us to a newer, more vulnerable Superman – and this issue begins as Supes starts wearing his new costume and patrolling for evil-doers in Metropolis! Lois Lane, the star reporter for The Daily Planet, is trying desperately to get a story about this new super hero but she is always just one step behind. Finally, she concocts a mischievous plan that will force Superman to meet her face to face. All seems to be going well until she meets the newspaper’s newest recruit!

My 2 Cents:

  • I gotta admit – I like the classic Superman look and attitude! Superman, in this book, totally reminds me of the Christopher Reeve Superman, and I think that is cool!
  • The art was once again very good – especially for 1986. I wonder if being written and drawn by the same person makes for an overall stronger story – it was nicely done here!
  • I liked Lois Lane. Even though she is devious and a bit snarky I thought her character was portrayed very well.

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 5 stars
  • Art: 4 stars
  • Fun Factor: 5 stars
