Heads In Jars?

Did you ever see the cartoon series Futurama? It features several famous, dead celebrities whose heads have been preserved in jars of fluid – and they are still sentient. It was quite funny to see some famous US Presidents chewing out people in the 30th century! Anyway, this issue has a bit of a different spin on the whole headlessness thing, and it is well played too!

Daredevil #19 left us hanging on a little bit of a cliff as Daredevil’s head was separated from his body! This issue begins as Coyote, the one responsible for Matt’s bodily division, carries around Daredevil’s head while giving him an evil lecture. It seems that Coyote’s talent for creating portals have been beneficial for all kinds of criminals – smugglers, drug lords and especially human traffickers. It turns out that crimes against humanity are easier when victims don’t have their heads! While Matt’s head is tossed onto a big pile of other separated heads, his body does some finagling to escape from its bonds and make its way to Coyote’s control center. Daredevil succeeds in freeing Coyote’s hostages, but somebody forgot to tell them that Matt is the good guy here!

My 2 Cents:

  • While the story and dialogue were well written, I must confess that I found it to be kind of a depressing story! Stupid criminals – why do they cause so much grief in the world?
  • Still, the idea of separating peoples’ heads from their bodies was a pretty unique idea. I’ve gotta give Mr. Waid some serious creativity kudos here!
  • Once again I found the cover to be totally mesmerizing! I can’t believe what an awesome job they are doing with the covers for this series!

How I Rate This Issue:

  • Story: 4 stars
  • Art: 4 stars
  • Fun Factor: 4 stars
